The Kennicott Bible facsimile
The KENNICOTT BIBLE is one of the most exquisite medieval Spanish manuscripts in existence and is the treasure of The Bodleian Library, Oxford. The Tenach together with Rabbi David Kimchi's grammatical treatise Sefer Mikhlol was copied by the scribe, Moses ibn Zabara and illuminated by Joseph Ibn Hayyim in 1476 in La Coruña. From its inception the manuscript was planned as a lavish work illuminated with burnished gold and silver leaf. The highly stylised figures delight the eye with the richness of their colours and bear witness to the close co-operation between the scribe, the artist and the patron.
---The facsimile was printed in up to 12 colours on a specially made parchment paper and burnished gold was copied by laying metal leaf by hand. Sample leaves measure 32 x 26 cm (12½ x 10in).
Hold your mouse over an image for an enlargement and over the blue button for a description of the leaf. Both sides of a leaf are only shown if they are both decorated.

CARPET PAGES (fully decorated pages without text) separating the Torah section from the Prophets

£ 60.00 Kennicott Bible folio 120 folio 120
The turquoise filigree panel depicts the menorah, the seven-branched candelabrum, described in Exodus as made of pure beaten gold. It has a main shaft and six branches, and stands on a crouching lion. The flames accord with the best known exegesis of the Bible from the eleventh century on, that of Rashi, whose interpretation here of Numbers 8:2 is followed. The tripod base of the menorah, barely visible above the crouching lion, is also found in Rashi's commentary on Exodus 25:31, where it is described as being 'made in the form of a box, with three legs protruding beneath it'. An additional flower at the bottom, at the junction between the shaft and the base, is an interpretation of the Babylonian Talmud (Menahot, 29a) based on Exodus 25:34 and Numbers 8:4.
The two pairs of stylised tongs hanging from the lower branches of our menorah, 'made for extracting the wicks from the oil, for putting them into position and drawing them into the mouths' (Rashi on Exodus 25:38), have undergone similar modifications.
The lion at the foot of the menorah may symbolise the Tribe of Judah, whom Jacob blessed with the words: 'Judah is a lion's whelp... he stooped down, he crouched like a lion, and as an old lion, who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah etc.' (Genesis 49:9-10). This was taken to mean that, the messiah being of the house of David, the tribe of Judah would continue to reign in the future. The lion is therefore a symbol of redemption in common with the entire array of sanctuary implements.

£ 60.00 Kennicott Bible folio 121 folio 121
This page depicts the Sanctuary Implements and is divided into two compartments, with the gold and coloured implements prominent against the bright blue ground.
The first item in the top compartment is the pitcher-like laver on 'its stand', which was used for washing the priests' hands and feet (Exodus 30:18-21, 38:8 On the second step is a flesh-hook for turning the sacri¬ficial meat on the altar (Rashi on Exodus 27:3), On the lower step of the stone is Aaron's rod, In the centre of the top compartment is the Ark of the Covenant, surmounted by a foliage motif enclosing the Tables of Testimony, one in silver and the other in gold (Exodus 25:10-18, 37:1-).
In the top left corner are the Altar of Sacrifice and a large brown tree growing on the Mount of Olives. The Altar of Sacrifice (Exodus 27: 1-7, 38: 1-6) is constructed with stairs and two ramps. The tree on the Mount of Olives alludes to the coming of the messiah.
At the top of the lower compartment of the page are two horns and two long trumpets. The latter were used to call an assembly of the princes, to sound the alarm in wartime, and to proclaim the sacrifices on feast days (Numbers 10:2-10). In the centre of the lower compartment is the shewbread table, with twelve loaves of bread arranged in two tiers.
Between the loaves, hovering above the table, are two bird-like, stylised cherubim with fish-like wings and beaks crossed.

£ 55.00 Kennicott Bible folio 122 folio 122
The fully illuminated page is formed by series of colourful interlacing geometrical designs with a gold and green headed dragon with a scarlet tongue in each spandrel.. It is framed by a gold and greenish-blue rectangular design. Verso, the delicately executed roundel is exactly congruent with that overleaf, but it has no rectangular frame and no surrounding decoration, so that the dragons depicted overleaf are just visible round the circle. The central motif of red interlacing bands forms a six-petalled rosette, some¬what like the so-called 'shield of David'; however, at that period the shield of David was not yet a popularly significant Jewish symbol, and the rosette was not intended as such in Kennicott Bible. Rosette and background are executed in very delicate filigree work.
The framing band is decorated with an interlacing white bar.

£ 55.00 Kennicott Bible folio 123 folio 123

£ 55.00 Kennicott Bible folio 185 folio 185
King David as an old man at the beginning of the Book of Kings, is seated on a stylised gold and coloured throne decorated with geometrical interlaces and penwork foliage motifs. He has a long greying beard, wears a large crown, and holds a large gold club for a sceptre. The miniature bears, however, some resemblance to pictures of the king in playing cards from a popular Spanish pack of cards. David's large club should be compared with a sheet of various Catalan cards which was found in the binding of a book printed in Barcelona in 1495 and may have been available to Joseph, the artist when he designed King David. By providing it with a Biblical context, Joseph produced a re¬presentation of David that is apparently unique.

The beginning of the Book of Jonah contains an exquisite illustration of the Prophet being swallowed (quite happily) by a large fish. Joseph may have been inspired to illustrate Jonah by the illustration in the Cervera Bible. Jonah being swallowed by a fish rather than by a whale or a sea monster accords with the Bible. Jonah had been an important figure in Jewish art since Antiquity, for he was regarded by the Jews as a forerunner of the Messiah, the man who would hunt Leviathan and bring it to Paradise for the righteous to feast upon. Joseph Ibn Hayyim the artist, chose to depict the ship with a brick pattern on the hull and the crow's nest with spears in it, while a red dragon forms the figurehead. Ibn Hayyim's ingenious use of space enabled him to include every detail without requiring the scribe to leave extra space. This leaf has been over trimmed and is offered at a reduced price.

The artist's colophon at the very end of the manuscript states explicitly 'I, Joseph Ibn Hayyim, illuminated and completed this book.' His artistic nature is dramatically expressed even in his colophon, which is spread flamboyantly over an entire page. Each letter is painted as a different zoomorphic or anthropomorphic creature, demonstrating his sense of colour and decoration. Joseph Ibn Hayyim, was intimately acquainted with another manuscript, the Cervera Bible and used it as a model for many of his illustrations. He did, however, also draw his inspiration from other models, transforming the decorative and illustrative material with great imagination.
His relations with the scribe, Moses Ibn Zabarah, were very close, for the scribe planned the layout and allotted the spaces for illumination. Joseph followed Moses' guidance in this, but he had his own models for the subjects and motifs of his work. His ability to manipulate the sumptuous illumination within these narrow spaces is evidence of his experience and competence; only in the carpet pages and the Kimkhi arcades was the scribe guided by his lay-out.
